About Wendy…
My life's journey
has taken me down some fun and fulfilling roads.
I am a native of
Zebulon, North Carolina, and reside with my Speagle dog Chamblee, in Franklin
County.
After attending Atlantic
Christian and Louisburg Colleges, I (finally) graduated from
East Carolina University (GO Pirates!) in 1982 as a Home
Economist, and my passions have always been about the
nurturing of family, friends, home and its comforts. In 2007, I was chosen as one of ECU's
"100 Incredible Women Alumni” and I was so surprised and humbled by such
an honor! Additionally, in 2009, I was chosen to receive the College of Human Ecology’s (formerly Family
& Consumer Sciences)
“Legacy Of Leadership” Award.
For a time, I dabbled in the hotel industry while operating a gift basket shop
in the evenings and on weekends. All the while, I was
building credentials as a caterer with my
company, Angels On Call. This
business experienced rapid growth leading me to expand my services
into wedding and event planning in
order to meet all the needs of my clients. The basket business was
soon replaced by a small retail bridal
shop providing all things needed by the many brides I found
myself consulting. As the business continued to grow, Angels On
Call planned events for corporate clientele, from the smallest of meetings
to rather large themed events for hundreds... and oh, all this while working full time in
the ER a spell, then as a Dietary
Coordinator at WakeMed!
In
1998, I took a HUGE leap and left the security of my
"real job" to launch my own Personal Chef business, Angel In Your Kitchen. It was during these years as a
Personal Chef I pursued my passion as a culinary writer and penned
a small syndicated newspaper column, "Kiss The Cook." Over
the years I have published one (family)
cookbook and co-edited two
others. I was fortunate to have been featured over the years in various
media, including Small Business
Opportunities magazine, Southern
Living magazine (June 2004), Triangle
East magazine (April/May 2006), the Zebulon Record (now Eastern Wake
News) and numerous times in The News and Observer, where I have been noted
as a "local cooking expert!" Additionally, I have appeared
on WPTF radio several times and featured in specials on WRAL (channel 5)
and WTVD (channel 11) and periodically on NBC 17's My Carolina Today show. Videos of those shows can be seen on my Throw Cooking web page. I've styled coverw for Down Home Magazine,
written articles for it and created recipes for that and others.... including George's BBQ sauce.
On occasion, I judge cooking contests, something I love doing... and in 2010, was the Blue Ribbon winner for my new sugar free ketchup at the NC State Fair! In summer of 2011, I won Midstate Mills Southern Biscuit Cooking Contest for my "Oinkers." You can see those over at my Throw Cooking site also...
Since 2010, I have been Food Stylist and Recipe Developer/Tester for Our State Magazine
Be sure to see the February 2012 issue for the spectacular cakes I developed especially for this issue, and see one of them featured on the issue cover.
Being the crazy entrepreneur that
I find myself to be, in 1999, I met a gal online in Texas and
together, we founded the Personal Chefs Network,
Inc., a professional
organization teaching folks how to start and manage their own successful
business! PCN trained thousands of folks around the globe with the
educational manuals I co-wrote and edited, “The Making of a Personal Chef©.”
In December of 2005, I decided it was time to look down new
roads and sold my half of the company to my business partner. At that time, I launched Wendy's HOME EConomics! Cooking Classes and Culinary Fun Stuff!
I have taught cooking classes and provide culinary demonstrations for businesses, civic and church groups
and just groups of friends dinner-party style in their homes. My blog is at www.WendysHomeEconomics.com.
Early in 2007, I
literally had a dream about being in someone's kitchen, with my arms flailing
in the air in this vivid dream. I was telling these people (not sure who
they were!), that I needed to redo their kitchen because it simply was not
functional! After having this same dream twice in one week, it made
me think that perhaps God was pointing me in this new direction so I delved
into hours and hours of research around the clock for days! I quickly realized that outdoors was where
I wanted to go with my new journey so I honed in on the rapidly growing
industry of outdoor kitchens and outdoor LIVE-ing! Since making the
decision to become an Outdoor
Living Consultant™, I have invested much time learning
everything I can to be able to bring my services and passion to my
client’s back yards!
Shall we get started… ???
